Determining Tropospheric Concentrations of Trace Gases from Space

چکیده

Background The new observations of the tropospheric distributions of trace gases such as NO2 (nitrogen dioxide), SO2 (sulphur dioxide), HCHO (formaldehyde), BrO (bromine monoxide) and O3 (ozone), retrieved from GOME (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment) measurements, herald the opening of a new era for tropospheric production, as a result of agricultural activities, and above all by vehicles such as cars and aircraft. Many of these primary pollutants are transformed in the atmosphere to secondary pollutants, such as ozone or formaldehyde, via sequences involving literally hundreds of compounds and thousands of reactions. These pollutants are transported within the atmosphere to regions that can be far from the sources, and there give rise to profound ecological damage and change. Many of the pollutants are damaging to human health and natural ecosystems.

Satellite remote sensing of surface air quality

Satellite remote sensing of air quality has evolved dramatically over the last decade. Global observations are now available for a wide range of species including aerosols, tropospheric O3, tropospheric NO2, CO, HCHO, and SO2. Capabilities for satellite remote sensing of these species in the boundary layer are reviewed for current instruments, along with physical processes affecting their accur...

Global Monitoring of Atmospheric Trace Gases, Clouds and Aerosols from UV/vis/NIR Satellite Instruments: Currents Status and Near Future Perspectives

A new generation of UV / vis / near-IR satellite instruments like GOME (since 1995), SCIAMACHY (since 2002), OMI (since 2004), and GOME-2 (since 2006) allows to measure several important stratospheric and tropospheric trace gases like O3, NO2, OCIO, HCHO, SO2, BrO, and H2O as well as clouds and aerosols from space. Because of its extended spectral range, the SCIAMACHY instrument also allows the...

Quantifying sources and sinks of trace gases using space-borne measurements: current and future science.

We have been observing the Earth's upper atmosphere from space for several decades, but only over the past decade has the necessary technology begun to match our desire to observe surface air pollutants and climate-relevant trace gases in the lower troposphere, where we live and breathe. A new generation of Earth-observing satellites, capable of probing the lower troposphere, are already orbiti...

Exposure to moderate concentrations of tropospheric ozone impairs tree stomatal response to carbon dioxide.

With rising concentrations of both atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO(2)) and tropospheric ozone (O(3)), it is important to better understand the interacting effects of these two trace gases on plant physiology affecting land-atmosphere gas exchange. We investigated the effect of growth under elevated CO(2) and O(3), singly and in combination, on the primary short-term stomatal response to CO(2) co...

Robust local polynomial regression and statisticalevaluation

This paper deals with an absorption spectroscopic method for trace gas measurements called DOAS (Diierential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) from a statistical point of view. The DOAS technique is an absorption spectrosco-pic technique to measure trace gas concentrations. It is capable of detecting and measuring a number of important trace gases at tropospheric concentration levels by observin...
